Most people are not in the mood to have sex all day long, every day – accept maybe on vacation or in the early stages of dating. In long term relationships, life often gets in the way. The frequency of sex can wax and wane as couples deal with all of the competing needs such as recovering from illnesses, exhaustion, stress & children. At times the desire to have sex may feel elusive and infrequent. This is normal. However, if you find yourself avoiding sex often, or for a prolong period of time, then you you may be experiencing a sexual aversion.
Sexual aversions can occur when:

  • You are with your partner for the wrong reasons, such as obligation.
  • You and your significant other have been fighting and you no longer feel emotionally close. For some people emotional connection is closely connected to sexual desire.
  • You dislike the way your partner smells or looks, and experience a loss of attraction.
  • You have trouble teaching your partner the ways in which you like to be touched. Overtime, sexual ineptness can be unappealing.
  • You are experiencing flashbacks of sexual trauma.

If you are experiencing one of the above sexual aversions to your partner, discuss it with him or her. Most of the aversions can be worked through with a little bit of communication. Through your conversations with your partner, you may realize that what you believed to be a sexual aversion was simply you and your partner not making time to be sexual. Good sex takes energy and with all the competing needs of life, it’s easy to forget the importance of creating the time to be intimate.
