Psychotherapy is a great option when a mental health crisis occurs. Counseling & therapy are an incredible tool for people coping with day to day issues of feeling sad, anxious, guilty, confused, lonely, disheartened, bored, angry, lost, stuck or grieving. Therapy helps people learn from their experiences such as being love bombed and to be able to more accurately assess the situation so that one can make better choices that will help their present and / or future self. The Center for Growth, originally known as Therapy in Philadelphia, offers in person individual counseling, couples counseling, marriage therapy, and family therapy, and support groups. We have therapy offices in Center City Philadelphia, Ocean City NJ, Fayetteville GA, Mechanicsville VA and Santa Fe NM. Additionally we offer virtual counseling services. Our counselors and therapists not only stay current with the latest tools and techniques that therapy can offer, but most of them are leaders in the field. The Center for Growth has a robust training program. Our senior level clinicians are each on the cutting edge and leaders in the field. In order to best help our clients, it is our belief that we too must always be pushing ourselves to grow and develop. To truly be able to see that change is possible, we too must learn and relearn how to be vulnerable.
The Center For Growth accepted the award for Best of Jersey Shore in the category of Counseling & Mental Health 2022 & 2023
Why the Center for Growth? We practice what we preach. We recognize that one of the barriers to change is making the decision to reach out for help. You don’t have to do this alone. Alternatively, you can call and talk to a clinician about what you are experiencing and we can set you up with a therapist who fits your particular needs. Our therapists and marriage counselors can bring you in-depth insights, tools for behavioral change, and emotional support. You deserve to feel fulfilled and happy. Life is short! We want you to seize the moment and get all you can from this life.

Life Transitions are a universal experience
Life transitions are a universal experience. You can be living in Philadelphia, Ocean City, Mechanicsville or even Santa Fe. Life transitions can leave you feeling uneasy, unsettled, uprooted, and down right overwhelmed. Navigating life transitions successfully often requires a lot of trust in self, support from family and friends, a bit of blind faith, and plenty of self-care.
While saying goodbye to what is known can be hard, it is a time of opportunity as you embark on the next stage of your life. With each transition, life will be full of choices and options. While you can’t stop change, you can learn to lean in and embrace change. You can make the most of what you have or you can get lost in the fight to stop the inevitable.
Each decade of life has it’s own stages with unique benefits and challenges. Sometimes transitions happen all at once – graduating, starting work, getting married, having children, illness, death, loss of a job, bankruptcy, launching children, becoming empty nesters, or moving. Our therapists can help you cope and prepare you with what to expect. They can also assist you in developing healthier habits, which can support and ground you during an otherwise unsettling time of transition.

Adolescence is hard even in the best of situations. Tweens / teens must grapple with a combination of societal pressure, familiar pressure, peer pressure, and academic pressure. Then, you add all of the changes they’re grappling with on a psychological level and everything going on in the world around them. COVID has made most tweens /teens world’s worse. Tweens / teens have been cooped up at home, deprived of their peers, and left to the Internet as the primary way of connecting with their peer group. Today’s teens have information overload without the skills of knowing how to connect to others. Today’s teens often struggle with feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and stress, which can be debilitating. Tweens /teens are growing up in a world that is very different than all generations before us.
Your child is now old enough to have their own thoughts, perspectives, and sense of self. However, tweens / teens still need parental guidance and support from you or their caretaker. Some parents are better equipped to emotionally support their child through this period of adolescence. Others simply can’t relate to the world their tween / teen is living in. The teen years were either too long ago, or simply too different.
Tweens / teens of today may want independence, but they’re not quite ready for it yet. And, on top of it all, they are trying to create their own identity and figure out their place in the world. So, It’s no wonder so many teens experience mental health struggles.
We offer professional adolescent and tween / teen therapy to assist parents in finding solutions to challenges faced by adolescents and teens of all ages. Our expert mental health professionals can also work directly with your teen to help them identify their dreams and the tools needed to achieve them.
And for those of you whose children are still little, we have a few therapists who specialize in working with small children. As well as many articles, such as parenting strategies for preschool children
Being the only or one of few is hard! Being different is hard. Adolescents is hard. It is a time of self exploration, developing emotional independence and mature relationships with peers isn't easy. Losing a parent, experiencing sexual trauma, struggling with panic attacks, OCD, mood disorders, or having a learning difference such as autism, adhd, or dyslexia is even more challenging and frequently mismanaged. Our mission is to help all children, tweens and teens of color working through their uncomfortable feelings from being excluded, singled out, or stereotyped simultaneous to their more generic developmental tasks of growing up. Working with therapists of color, who specialize in therapy for adolescents, create an atmosphere of safety. Your child knows that their therapist has had first hand experience with being treated differently. Our therapists can give your children, tweens and teens the tools to develop language that reflects their experiences, as well as self esteem, and the confidence to assert their needs. Connecting with therapists of color offer a unique type of support, fostering an environment from which they can learn to love themselves and be proud of their history.
Death and loss are a natural part of life, but that doesn’t make it easy. Grief doesn't always fit neatly into 5 stages. Grief and loss therapy is a space to share our stories of loss, to make meaning out of tragedy, to witness one another’s journeys, and to offer support, hope and empathy. Grief therapy is geared towards anyone who is struggling with life after the death of a family member, friend, partner, child or baby. Loss therapy is geared towards anyone who has experienced an unwanted transition. This may be a loss of a job or home, the loss of a marriage, or the loss of health. Together, we will focus on meaning-making and post-traumatic growth. If you are a tween / tween be sure to let us know. We have therapists that specialize in grief and loss for tweens and teens.
Codependency is a dysfunctional way of relating to ourselves and others. Those who struggle with codependency often find it difficult to maintain a healthy sense of self in relationships. These codependent patterns can be developed through our relationships with caregivers or significant others. Our counselors and therapists will work with you to better identify your own thoughts, feelings, wants, and needs. Too often people struggling with codependency subjugate their needs for others. By not putting yourself at the center you risk ultimately harming yourself emotionally, spiritually and/or physically.
People who struggle with codependency are often in relationships that are fear based, controlling, and sometimes abusive. The primary concern is a fear of abandonment and being alone. Codependents’ primary way of feeling self worth is through being in relationship with others. o lose that relationship means a loss of self. Once alone, codependents feel all the feelings that they were trying to avoid by being in a relationship. Breaking the cycle of codependency is scary. Learning to be yourself is liberating and frees you up to be your best self. Change can be scary – our counselors and therapists can help.

Now you do have the ability to be present with yourself in a way that works for you and to make the changes that will nurture your future self. * If you are a tween / teen be sure to let us know, some of our therapists specialize in helping tweens / teens recover from trauma and abuse.
Has someone falsely accused you of plagiarism, fraud, theft, sexual harassment, rape, child or spousal abuse?
The first piece of advice that you likely received was talk to a criminal trial lawyer. We agree. You need someone on your side to help you navigate the legal system. The second piece of advice that you likely received was to tell no one. Anything that you say to anyone could be held against you in a court of law. We are here to tell you all of this is true. Talking to friends opens you up to greater legal jeopardy and they may be asked to testify against you. This is where therapy comes in. Therapist’s sessions with clients are confidential (unless you are going to harm yourself, others and/or children). When you are falsely accused, therapists have nothing to report and are able to keep what you say confidential. Therapists are critical supports during this period because just when you need your tribe the most, for your own legal protection, you have been cut off from them. This can lead to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and fear. Therapists can be a valuable source of support to help you emotionally cope with what is happening to you. The legal system can be very unjust. While we can’t change what is happening to you (only a lawyer can) we can help you make the most of your situation. This event does not define you; your goals are still achievable. Through therapy, you can learn to be flexible and make the most out of a terrible situation.
Under title 9, college students are particularly at risk for being victims of false allegations of sexual harassment and rape. In a regular court of law, the burden of proof is on the victim. In a college setting, the burden of proof to prove one’s innocence is on the alleged perpetrator. We are strong advocates of supporting people who have been falsely accused. False accusations traumatize innocent people.
Have you ever felt anxious, worried, or experienced obsessive thoughts? Our Philadelphia, Ocean City Fayetteville GA, and Mechanicsville treatment centers focus on using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which research has consistently shown to be the most effective treatment for anxiety, panic and OCD. Using CBT, we can help you develop the tools you need to significantly reduce the severity and frequency of OCD and other anxiety symptoms. We can also work with you to mitigate the impact of these often debilitating disorders on you and your family. Treatment services for anxiety, panic and OCD are tailored to the specific needs of each person. Treatment may include individual therapy, family therapy and/or group therapy. In addition, we have an anxiety support group as well as an OCD support group. If you would like to learn more about individual therapy for OCD or any of the related anxiety-based conditions, you can call us or self schedule with one of our clinicians. If you are a teen / tween be sure to ask for one of therapists who specialize in anxiety, panic and OCD treatment for tweens and teens.
Do you struggle with ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourettes, or Autism? Some of our therapists on staff have specific training in these areas. Neurodiversity impacts not only how you take in new information, but how you experience the world. Not all mental health counselors understand the nuances of each learning style and what that means. At The Center For Growth, we have therapists who are specifically trained to structure treatment in a way that works for neurodiverse clients. Additionally, we can help parents, partners and friends develop the needed tools to be part of an effective support system. People who identify as neurodiverse often have incredible insight and become leaders in their respective fields. Your difference is your gift. Our job is to help you harness your natural gifts so that you can get the most out of life. If you seeking care for your tween or teen, be sure to let our intake therapist know so that we can match your child with a therapist who specializes in tween / teen therapy. Adult and child therapy while similar is not the same.

The Center for Growth is known for its support groups. Support groups can be a valuable part of a person’s care plan. Support groups bring together people who are all grappling with similar issues. Each week the group therapist presents a different topic or skill to work on. Learning occurs not only from the questions you ask, but from hearing what others are going through and how they are managing it. Our groups are designed to be effective for clients already engaged in individual therapy or as a standalone treatment.
