Heather McGee, Ph.D, M.A. (Associate Therapist)

Heather McGee (she/her/hers) is a pre-licensed counselor with experience treating individuals struggling with compulsive behaviors, depression, anxiety, sexual and gender identity issues, trauma, shame, loss and bereavement. She also has a special interest in working with individuals who are facing infertility, relationship difficulties, and intimate partner violence, or who have concerns around fostering and adoption.

Heather holds a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Wake Forest University and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Loyola University of Chicago. Her clinical approach is strengths-based and highly collaborative. She draws on the ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) framework and incorporates aspects of psychodynamic, relational, humanistic and narrative theories in her work.

Heather’s work with clients often focuses on exploring the way in which our personal narratives (how we make sense of our own lives) can limit how we see ourselves, causing us to over-identify with our stories, repeat painful patterns of behavior, and feel stuck or trapped within those patterns. By offering a supportive and non-judgmental space in which clients can explore their stories, identities and patterns, Heather works to help clients connect with their own inner wisdom, transcend limiting experiences, and discover new ways of feeling and being in the world.

Heather is currently working toward her license (LPC) at the Center for Growth, which she plans to obtain in 2022.

In addition to her prior work as a therapist, Heather worked for a decade in higher education, promoting community-based learning and advocating for marginalized individuals and groups. She has taught philosophy courses at several universities on themes of happiness, human nature, and restorative justice. When not working, Heather enjoys spending time with her partner and two daughters, cooking, watching films, and generally trying to be creative (drawing/painting/photography).
